Light installations and neon interior design – Inspiration

Lights can be gorgeous as interior decoration, in the form of static neon decorations or as dynamic light installations at nightclubs, art installations, and other exhibition venues. You might occasionally see it in restaurants, or if you’re ambitious, use it to decorate your own space.

I don’t use the word “neon” strictly. When I say neon, I include all sorts of LED lights, neon-look-alike lighting and colors, lasers, and such.

Immersive light installations

I have always loved seeing light installations at parties and venues. It looks very cool and futuristic, perfect for any nighttime events. It’s also especially great when combined with sound.

As an example, below is an immersive light and sound installation by Cluster. These types of installations can be seen around the world. Some memorable places I’ve seen light installations are in Berlin and Amsterdam. For example, in the Dark Matter installations in Berlin, and in art installations by Himmelt Under Berlin (an art collective).

One of my all-time favorite neon photographs is by the russian photographer 5TEP5. I have never been to Moscow myself, but judging by his photos, I suspect there may be many light artists active in Moscow, Russia, as well.

Using neon lights in your home

Real neon lights are typically not placed in homes as decorations, since they can be expensive and consume a lot of electricity. However, they can be beautifully places when selectively chosen and intentionally placed to bring attention to a specific area in the home.

If you want to decorate with neon art pieces at home, you can check out these, for example:

If you want to place light strips in your home, a tip is to use subtle colors (e.g., soft orange), and to hide the direct light source from view. For example, by placing the lights behind or under other objects such as mirrors and a chest of drawers.

Neon Decoration in Restaurants

Cool restaurants have neon lights. Okay, not all, but many do. Especially in asian countries, and the trend is moving to the West as well.
