The Habit of a Place

I feel Gothenburg is not unknown to me. Going outside doesn’t bring unexpectedness. That’s why I like travelling and living abroad. Every day feels like an adventure, at least in the beginning, until I get into a habit and routine. Walking the same streets, going to the same shops, seeing the same people. Novelty brings excitement; familiarity brings comfort, stability, and safety. What do I want?

But that’s not right either. I do not know everything in Gothenburg. I can still go outside and meet people I know on the street, which is a pleasant surprise (as long as I feel I look good). There are so many bars, restaurants, and cafés I haven’t been to yet. Tonight I’m going to a new jazz place I’ve never been to but have heard about.

So, it’s not about the place. It’s about the habits and routines I develop associated with a place. I can change that. I can meet new people, go to new places, and break the habits.
