AI Gothenburg: A New Startup Hub for Early-Stage Founders in Göteborg

Today GP published an article about AI Gothenburg opening as a startup hub at Järntorget. I think that’s really exciting and something that’s genuinely needed here. I’ve long been interested in various startup hubs and coworking spaces and have visited several, both in Berlin, Copenhagen, and around Central Europe. One place I loved, for example, was Factory Berlin, where freelancers, startup founders, and students worked side by side and met frequently at social events. I hope we’ll see something similar here in Gothenburg now!

What is AI Gothenburg?

Business Region Göteborg describes AI Gothenburg as a gathering place for early-stage startups, where founders can meet potential collaborators and other startup founders to form an innovation hub. The focus will be specifically on AI-based products, an area that is growing incredibly fast today.

On AI Gothenburg’s website (aigothenburg.com), you can apply to become a founder, partner, or supporter. To become a founder, you either need to be at the very beginning of your idea or have already started building a company, but need help moving forward. If accepted, you gain access to the community, which includes communication channels online (WhatsApp group chat), a potentially physical office space, coaching sessions, and 12-month access to AI tools such as Lovable.

Startup opportunities for Gothenburg’s students!

I currently teach at Chalmers in UX, digital product design, and software development (interaction design and software engineering), and I think this could be an incredibly valuable addition for our students. So many of our students are ambitious, skilled, smart, and want to start their own businesses.

However, many young people feel they need to leave Gothenburg for Stockholm or move abroad to be part of a vibrant entrepreneurial scene. That was exactly the reason I moved to Berlin several years ago, when I wanted to start my own startup. I wanted to be part of a culture where other ambitious people surround you, and I didn’t feel I could find that here. Hopefully, initiatives like this can change that.

Sure, we already have multiple large AI-interested companies here, such as Volvo, Ericsson, and larger consulting firms, as well as AI initiatives like AI Sweden. But it’s not the same thing as a smaller, more agile team of 3–5 people who want to and can move fast, embrace the newest technology, and experiment with rapid changes.

We need more fun startup events in Gothenburg

I hope this initiative will organize more fun, youthful events that prioritize creative workshops and more enjoyable, socially engaging ones with music and a more relaxed atmosphere. We already have many more “serious” initiatives here, but I think they fall short of engaging younger generations because they lack fun. We can have both fun and ambition at the same time, and I think it’s time to move away from serious and formal events if we want to engage young entrepreneurs.

It will be exciting to see what happens with this initiative — and I find myself a little tempted to apply!
