UI design is one of the most exciting fields in our modern times because it’s all around us. It’s the first thing you see when you stop your alarm clock. It’s what you interact with when you scroll through your social media apps. It’s the app you use to buy your bus ticket to work or school.
Close to every person today comes in contact with the result of interface design during all parts of their day. It happens every time we interact with our smartphones, our computers, or any other smart device.
Increasingly, interface design is being implemented in physical spaces as well. For example, as a way to unlock buildings through smart screens installed by the door. Or as a way to order and pay for food at restaurants. Or even to check in at hospitals.
For those who want to help create and shape all those interactions, both current and future ones, working as a UI designer is a great way.
At its core, UI design is an interdisciplinary skill between technology, human psychology, and aesthetics. It is also that combination of skills that makes the work creative, intellectually challenging and varied for the practitioner.
Some fear that the work of designers is past, with the rise of AI-based technologies that can sketch up hundreds of ideas in seconds. But as technology advances, even more designs by designers will be needed for these systems. Because of this, I’d say that as long as there are users, there will be a need for designers.
