I want to explore how AI could affect our journaling and self-reflection practices. Will we use AI as a standard tool to reflect on our experiences, ask for advice on life decisions, and treat them as friends and therapists? If so, we need to design AI-based reflection tools that are as useful as possible, while mitigating the potential risks. To do so, we first need to anticipate potential futures with AI – which we can do using design fiction.

Related: Using AI for Self-Reflection: Benefits, Risks, and How to Get Started

What is Design Fiction?

Design fiction is a form of speculative design. Design fiction can be used to explore the future impacts of technology, such as AI. We use our imaginations, creativity, and observations from the world around us to paint a narrative that has not yet happened, but might.

Design fiction can be great for uncovering the potential unintentional effects of technology. For example, when we’re designing a new application, we can consider the ethical aspects by using storytelling and design fiction to explore what potential negative effects or harms our design could cause.

We can also use design fiction to build a future world. We can imagine how people in the future might interact with technology, and what role certain technologies will play in their lives.

References

The Little Book of Design Fiction for the Internet of Things by Paul Coulton, Joseph Lindley, and Rachel Cooper

How to Use Design Fiction to Explore the Future of AI

AI is rapidly changing our lives. We are increasingly asking AI for advice, to help us solve problems at work, and to produce texts and images. This fundamentally changes our capabilities and how we do creative work. I wonder how the future of work, life, and creativity will look when AI has become an established technology.

To explore the future, design fiction can be used as a method. We can use design fiction to speculate potential futures, discuss those futures with others to reflect on the implications – explore both the benefits and harms – and then work together with other designers and researchers to uncover a set of design implications for future designs.

Exploring the Potential Futures of AI Reflections

In particular, I want to examine the future of AI-based reflection. How will we use AI for self-reflections in the future? What potential harms and benefits are there? How can we design AI reflection tools that support the benefits and mitigate the potential risks?

Related: How can AI be used for journaling?

This will be the focus of my next research study.

I am intrigued by the idea of using design fiction to explore how we should design AI reflection tools for the future.
