Gothenburg University launched a new master’s program in Human-Centered AI<\/a> during the autumn of 2023. I was one of the first students in the first cohort, running from 2023 to 2025. What happened to the students who completed the Human-Centered AI master’s program after graduation? And what job opportunities exist for those studying the program or considering it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New master’s programs evolve quickly from their first year, both through student feedback and through trial and error. Being part of the first or one of the earliest cohorts of a new program can sometimes feel a bit like being a guinea pig \u2014 but someone has to do it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think this HCAI master’s program is incredibly important for our society and a very welcome addition to the range of interdisciplinary programs available in Gothenburg. But I also understand that many people have questions about what the program involves and what career opportunities it leads to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The content of this article reflects my own perspective and experiences. Of course, your experience and others’ may differ from mine. But since I’ve been contacted by several prospective students, both via LinkedIn and at social events, who have asked me about this program, I feel it’s time to share my experiences in one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was the Human-Centered AI master’s program about?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Human-Centered AI master’s program at the University of Gothenburg is about people and AI. How does AI affect us as individuals and society as a whole? It covers everything from designing and developing AI-based applications to formulating laws and regulations for AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the name suggests, the program approaches AI from a human-centered perspective. This means exploring how AI can be developed, designed, and used for humanity’s benefit. New AI applications should prioritize human wellbeing, health, and success and not cause us harm. A central concept throughout the program was, for example, “augmentation instead of automation”, which is the idea that AI should enhance human abilities rather than replace us, for instance, in the labor market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
