What Can We Do About It?

Due to the rise of AI, there is a worry about the future careers of recent graduates, current students, and the younger generation. Right now, we’re already seeing an increasing number of newly graduated who have trouble finding junior roles. While it is not certain that this unemployment rate is attributable to AI, many fear that AI is negatively affecting job opportunities across creative fields such as writing, programming, and design.

With AI, some companies may be hesitant to hire junior programmers, designers, or writers, since AI can be used by more senior workers to become productive and efficient. While AI outputs can be unreliable, a senior professional can also evaluate them and edit them to a higher standard, eliminating the need for a junior person to create initial drafts. This might lead to fewer job opportunities for junior workers, with negative long-term consequences. Who’s going to replace our senior workers if juniors do not get a chance to work and learn?

I don’t think we can rely on companies themselves to take on the responsibility of hiring and training junior creatives unless they’re already doing very well financially. Many smaller companies are already struggling, often in global competition; they need to optimize for survival, meaning minimizing costs (fewer employees) and maximizing productivity. Plus, most companies do not see it as their social responsibility to ensure they train junior professionals for the long term.

Instead, a more realistic solution to this challenge would be through political means. For example, we in Sweden could make it cheaper for companies to hire new graduates, or create more state-funded trainee and internship opportunities. However, the cost would fall on the country’s taxpayers, either through higher taxes or by reallocating existing tax revenue, which is already stretched across society sectors. We’re already seeing a shortage of state funds for schools and hospitals. So, for this to be a realistic solution, it would probably require higher taxes, which would need to be agreed upon by our society. Are we, the taxpayers, ready to vote for and contribute more taxes to solve this issue?

Due to the rise of AI, there is a worry about the future careers of recent graduates, current students, and the younger generation.
